An early morning crash on southbound U.S. 1 in Bensalem left a Philadelphia man dead Tuesday after his disabled car was hit by two other vehicles, authorities said.
Police said the crash happened at about 5:30 a.m. when the driver, later identified as 45-year-old Julio Ricardo Munoz, stepped out of a 2007 Honda Fit that had stopped in the number-two southbound lane. A 2022 Kia Seltos then collided with the Fit, pushing it into Munoz, and a 2017 Jeep Cherokee struck the disabled car shortly afterward. Munoz sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Newport Dispatch, a front-seat passenger in the Honda was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and police said drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation, officials said.
Crash scene and response
As the morning commute began, Bensalem Township Fire Rescue shut down the southbound lanes of Route 1 between Rockhill Drive and Street Road while crews cleared the wreckage and redirected traffic. Patch reported that at least three vehicles were involved and that delays stretched through the area near the Neshaminy Mall and the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange.
Why this stretch matters
U.S. 1 through Bensalem has been the focus of a multi-year reconstruction and safety program that widened lanes, rebuilt bridges and reconfigured ramps near Rockhill Drive. PennDOT says the RC2 phase, roughly $110–$116 million, reconstructed and widened portions of U.S. 1 and upgraded ramps and bridges in the Rockhill Drive corridor to improve flow and safety.
Investigation and next steps
Bensalem Township police said the crash remains under investigation and have not released additional details about whether any citations or charges will follow. Authorities have not publicly announced further findings as investigators continue to review the scene.
