Wednesday evening’s commute on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee went from routine to soaked in a hurry, as heavy storms forced emergency crews to shut down key stretches of the freeway. Low-lying sections filled with water, southbound lanes were closed at Becher Street, and northbound traffic near Holt Avenue was staring down an imminent shutdown. Drivers were urged to avoid flooded areas altogether and not to attempt driving through standing water.
According to WISN, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said a full freeway closure was already in place on southbound I-43 at Becher, with a full closure imminent on northbound I-43 at Holt. In an update at 9:25 p.m. CDT on April 15, 2026, WISN reported that the sheriff's office urged people to stay off the roads.
Flash flood warning for Milwaukee County
According to the National Weather Service, a Flash Flood Warning covered parts of Milwaukee County through 11:00 p.m. CDT on April 15, 2026, after radar showed heavy, persistent downpours. The agency reiterated the familiar safety reminder, "Turn around, don't drown," noting that underpasses and other low points can quickly fill with water and strand vehicles.
Construction and why this corridor floods
The I-43/Becher interchange was already in the early stages of a reconstruction project in April, with long-term detours and scheduled full-closure windows posted by the state. Those plans can limit options for rerouting traffic when the freeway unexpectedly shuts down. Per WisDOT, the work near Becher and Holt includes phased ramp closures that push more vehicles onto surface streets, complicating emergency detours when sudden flooding hits.
What drivers should do
Officials, including the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, urged people to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely essential, according to WISN. Motorists were advised to check 511WI, local traffic cameras, and news updates for information on when lanes reopen, and to expect heavy backups on surface streets until crews can clear the standing water and get the interstate moving again.
