In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a car plowed into the front of the Walgreens on Antelope Road in the Antelope area of Sacramento, tearing up the main entrance and setting off a sheriff's investigation. By the time deputies showed up, the vehicle involved was already gone, and crews spent the early morning working to secure the damaged storefront.
Scene and sheriff's account
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called out just after 3 a.m. to the Walgreens at 4331 Antelope Road. Investigators believe the driver intentionally rammed the vehicle into the building in an attempt to burglarize the store, according to FOX40. Deputies told reporters the car was already gone when they arrived, and an active investigation is underway.
What witnesses and logs show
California Highway Patrol logs include a note that a witness reported seeing the vehicle back up and ram the storefront several times, KCRA reported. CBS Sacramento reported that as of Tuesday morning it was still unclear whether the front door was completely breached or if any items were stolen.
Not an isolated tactic
This crash arrives on the heels of other recent vehicle-ramming burglaries in the Sacramento area. On April 22, police said a suspect drove into two south Sacramento businesses, Wayne's Wok and a Baskin-Robbins, before being arrested later that day, according to The Sacramento Bee. Investigators in that case used public-safety camera footage as part of their work, the outlet reported.
Investigation continuing
As detectives process the Antelope Walgreens scene, the sheriff's office has not yet released any suspect description or potential motive. Cleanup crews were still on site Tuesday morning while store employees evaluated the damage. KCRA reported that emergency responders had cleared the scene earlier, while repair efforts and the official investigation continue.
