Before sunrise Monday, a quiet stretch of Nottingham Street in southwest Houston turned into a crime scene, with nine small businesses waking up to a mess of shattered glass and ransacked interiors. Owners showed up to find windows busted out, merchandise tossed around and hastily nailed boards going up where glass used to be. No one was hurt, but the damage forced several shops to stay closed while the tally on repairs and losses begins, and the neighborhood is on edge about what might come next.
What happened
According to KHOU, the early-morning burglary spree hit nine different storefronts along the Nottingham Street corridor in quick succession. The station’s footage shows stunned owners stepping around broken glass, talking through what was stolen and how long it might take to get doors back open while they sweep, tape, and board their way through the aftermath.
Nottingham neighborhood has seen thefts before
Residents in the Nottingham area told ABC13 earlier this year that the neighborhood has already been dealing with an uptick in car break-ins and home thefts, a trend that has people on edge. The precinct constable's office told ABC13 it has deputies assigned to the neighborhood, yet neighbors say the steady drumbeat of thefts has chipped away at their sense of security.
A wider pattern across Harris County
This is not just a Nottingham problem. Commercial burglaries have been a stubborn issue across Harris County, and bars and restaurants have been frequent targets, according to Click2Houston. Those hits often look similar, with crooks smashing their way in, grabbing inventory, then taking off, leaving small businesses with repair bills and lost product they can hardly afford.
Police response
KHOU reports that Houston police are investigating Monday’s break-ins and are asking anyone who has information or surveillance footage from the area to get in touch with detectives. As of the station’s report, no arrests had been announced, and investigators were canvassing nearby properties and reviewing whatever video they could get.
In the meantime, business owners are boarding up, filing insurance claims and weighing extra security measures while they wait for answers. The spree has revived neighborhood calls for more visible patrols and tighter coordination between deputies and city police, as small business owners along Nottingham Street try to rebuild both their storefronts and their sense of safety.
