A San Antonio motorcyclist was left in critical condition Monday afternoon after slamming into the back of an East Central Independent School District bus on the city’s Southeast Side, authorities said. The impact sent the rider to a local hospital and briefly shut down part of South W.W. White Road near Red Haven as first responders rushed in and traffic was diverted around the scene.
Crash details and response
According to KSAT, the collision happened just before 2 p.m. Monday in the 3300 block of South W.W. White Road. The San Antonio Police Department told the station that the motorcyclist was transported to a hospital for treatment and that investigators are still working to determine exactly what led up to the crash. East Central ISD officials also told KSAT that one student was on the bus at the time and that both the student and the bus driver were unharmed.
Where it happened
As reported by The Express-News, district officials identified the crash location as the intersection of South W.W. White Road and Red Haven. The outlet notes that the motorcyclist hit the rear of the East Central ISD bus, prompting emergency crews to clear debris from the roadway and direct drivers around the area. Reporter Jacob Beltran also reported that East Central officials were coordinating with police as the scene was processed.
Statewide context
While school-bus crashes are relatively rare compared with other roadway collisions, they can be especially serious. The Texas Department of Transportation recorded nearly 2,500 crashes involving school buses in 2024, resulting in 11 deaths and 93 serious injuries across the state, The Dallas Morning News reported. TxDOT and safety advocates frequently point to speeding and distracted driving as major factors and remind drivers that they are required to obey school-bus flashing lights and stop arms. Investigators with the San Antonio Police Department will review the report from Monday’s crash to pinpoint contributing factors and decide whether any citations or charges are warranted, KSAT reported.
