Las Cazuelas, a family-run Mexican restaurant that has been a Southside fixture since 1997, has quietly changed hands. Drivers along I-35 between Southcross Boulevard and Division Avenue are now spotting new signage for El Guacamole Mexican Grill at the familiar Chalmers Avenue storefront.
In a Feb. 11 Facebook post, the owners announced that the business was changing management and that the operation would continue under new leadership. Since that statement, the location has taken on the El Guacamole name. The chain promoted a free grand opening for 3 p.m. on May 2, with live music, raffles, food and drink specials, a horse show and a mechanical bull, according to MySA.
New Identity at the Same Address
El Guacamole's website lists a “#3” location at 645 Chalmers Ave, indicating that the Chalmers storefront is now part of that chain. Delivery and listing platforms also show other El Guacamole outposts around the city, backing up the chain connection per DoorDash.
Southside Staple's Run
Las Cazuelas was founded by the Valadez family in 1997 and for decades billed itself as a multigenerational, family-run operation that preserved original recipes, per Las Cazuelas. The restaurant's site also lists 645 Chalmers Avenue as the longtime address and describes the family's history in the business.
When to Expect the New Spot
El Guacamole's social posts, shared publicly and summarized in local coverage, list the Chalmers address and a May 2 grand opening celebration starting at 3 p.m. Anyone planning to attend should check the chain's social channels for the most current details. MySA included screenshots and a timeline of the ownership change and promotion in its April 22 coverage.
