A 22-year-old man with multiple stab wounds showed up at Sutter Davis Hospital yesterday, and police later traced the attack to a downtown Davis alley during Picnic Day weekend, authorities said. The victim was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center with injuries described as potentially life-threatening, and the stretch of 3rd Street between F and G streets was locked down as an active crime scene. As of yesterday, detectives were still working the case and no arrests had been announced.
Hospital staff at Sutter Davis called police at about 2:30 AM to report the stabbing victim, according to CBS Sacramento. The outlet reports the man had suffered multiple stab wounds before being transported to UC Davis Medical Center for additional care and that officers identified the crime scene on the 700 block of 3rd Street.
The local paper, Davis Vanguard, reports that Lt. John Evans said officers were dispatched at roughly 2:28 AM and that members of the department’s Evidence Response Team processed the scene. That account places the attack in Tim Spencer Alley, a narrow downtown passage where Picnic Day crowds had been present earlier in the day.
Violence During Picnic Day Weekend
The stabbing unfolded during UC Davis’ Picnic Day weekend, when thousands of visitors typically fill the campus and downtown streets. The San Francisco Chronicle noted that hours earlier a shooting in nearby Howe Park had injured several people and that Davis police had boosted staffing and deployed drones for the weekend, while saying they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public.
