Boston wakes up on the cooler side Friday, with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s. Sunshine will do some heavy lifting by midday, sending inland highs into the upper 60s, while the immediate south coast hangs back in the low to mid 50s.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
By afternoon, a southwest breeze turns into more of a shove, with winds around 8 to 17 mph and gusts that could reach 29 mph. Exposed streets, bridges and ferry terminals will feel especially brisk. Late tonight, between about 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., a few brief, scattered showers may pass through, but any rain looks light and short-lived.
Many coastal waters are under Small Craft Advisories today; for full marine details, check the National Weather Service Boston and our earlier coverage this week (harbor gusts rattle evening commute).
Tonight: Brief Showers
Overnight lows dip to around 47 under mostly cloudy skies. Any showers that do develop should be quick hitters, so the late-night commute is more likely to see a few sprinkles than a full-on soaking.
Weekend Outlook
The weekend brings a more classic spring feel. Saturday and Sunday stay dry and seasonable, with highs generally in the middle 50s to lower 60s. Sunshine makes a stronger showing on Sunday.
Saturday itself will stay breezy, with northwest gusts of 20 to 30 mph. By Saturday night, cooler air settles in, sending temperatures into the 30s and leaving some outlying spots briefly near the upper 20s. Early next week turns much warmer again, with highs back into the 60s Monday and potentially into the 70s to 80s inland by Tuesday, depending on how stubborn coastal breezes are.
How To Prepare
Secure patio furniture, grills and other lightweight items before the afternoon gusts ramp up, and bicyclists should be ready for occasional crosswinds on open stretches of road. Boaters and ferry riders should review local notices and consider postponing nonessential trips while advisories are posted.
