New Yorkers rolled into Monday under mostly cloudy skies and low-40s chill, about 43°F in Central Park, with a brisk northwest breeze already in play. Those clouds should thin out by midday, trading gray for plenty of sunshine and an afternoon high near 54°F. It will not feel quite that mild everywhere, though, as the wind kicks in and undercuts the numbers. After a foggy, damp weekend, the air is much drier and crisper, so plan for a bright but blustery day if you are out running errands or getting your steps in.

Afternoon Winds Pick Up

Winds this afternoon are expected to run west to northwest around 10 to 18 mph, with gusts climbing into the 30s. Peak gusts could reach roughly 35 to 40 mph, especially on exposed bridges, along the waterfronts and by the BQE. That is strong enough to turn umbrellas into temporary kites and make ferry rides a bit more of an adventure, with some routes feeling choppy or a touch slower. Marine interests and small-craft operators should be on alert: ocean waters are under a Small Craft Advisory through 6 p.m. this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Slight Showers Monday Night And Tuesday

A slight chance of showers returns Monday night, mainly between about 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., with only spotty activity expected and lows holding in the mid-40s. Tuesday brings a better chance for isolated to scattered showers, along with a cold pocket of air aloft that could briefly flip some of that moisture to sleet or small snow pellets in higher, northern neighborhoods. Cool Midweek, Warmer By The Weekend

Temperatures stay on the cool side through midweek, with highs in the upper 40s to around 50 on Tuesday and Wednesday and overnight lows dipping into the 30s by Wednesday night. A milder southerly flow late in the week should help readings rebound into the 60s by Friday and into the upper 60s on Saturday, offering a much friendlier window for outdoor plans, according to the National Weather Service.
