In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a quiet stretch of Springside Place in southeast Atlanta turned into a homicide scene when police found a woman shot to death inside an SUV parked in the middle of the street, authorities said. Officers responded to a shots-fired call just after 1 a.m. and discovered the woman in the driver's seat, where she was pronounced dead. Police have not released her name, saying they are waiting to notify relatives.
According to WSB‑TV, officers were dispatched around 1:23 a.m. and arrived to find a Range Rover stopped in the middle of Springside Place. Inside, they located a 36-year-old woman who had been shot multiple times. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators told WSB‑TV they do not yet have a description of a suspect and are canvassing the area for clues.
In a statement to WSB‑TV, Lt. Christopher Butler said, "The early hours are typically hard to get into contact with some people," noting that detectives were working to speak with nearby residents and collect evidence. Police have not said whether they have recovered any surveillance video or identified additional witnesses.
Where this fits in citywide trends
The killing comes as Atlanta works to keep its homicide numbers moving in the right direction. The Atlanta Journal‑Constitution reported that police investigated about 127 homicides in 2024, down from 135 in 2023. City officials and public-safety leaders have pointed to community tips and targeted enforcement as tools they say are needed to prevent violent crime from climbing again.
Earlier violence in the Springside area
The blocks around Springside have seen deadly violence before. Hoodline reported on a fatal shooting on Springside Drive SE in August 2024, highlighting how southeast Atlanta neighborhoods have repeatedly drawn homicide investigations in recent years. That earlier coverage noted that investigators often depend on neighbors and camera footage to piece together overnight attacks, resources detectives say they are again pursuing in this case.
