Opening day at Six Flags St. Louis did not make it to closing time. The season opener on Saturday was shut down earlier than planned after multiple fights involving groups of juveniles pushed park staff to close the gates and clear the grounds. Families and other visitors who showed up ready for a full first day of the season were told to head out while law enforcement moved through the park to separate people and restore order. Rides and performances wrapped up abruptly, leaving many guests stunned at how fast the day unraveled.
Eureka Police Chief Michael Werges told First Alert 4 that "as many as 100 juveniles" were involved in multiple fights and said officers "responded quickly and dispersed the crowd." He added that about a half-dozen juveniles were detained and, according to the outlet, there were no injuries or damage to the park. Park officials opted to close early in an effort to de-escalate the situation, the report noted.
Park schedule and early shutdown
Six Flags' events calendar had promoted Saturday as the season opener and listed park hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the park's website. Instead, the unplanned closure meant rides, shows, and concessions shut down well before that advertised end time, cutting short the day for families and groups who expected to stay into the evening.
Visitor accounts and reaction
Attendees and witnesses later compared notes on local message boards and social platforms. One active local Reddit thread collected posts from people who said they were directed to leave the park while police managed the crowd. Those accounts described confusion at the sudden shutdown and frustration from families whose opening-day plans were cut short.
