Congregation Beth Israel and The Shlenker School on its campus closed on Wednesday after leaders said they were notified of possible threats to the site. Services and classes were put on hold while law enforcement reviewed the report, and families were told the shutdown was made out of an abundance of caution while authorities investigated.
Officials: Federation And School Say Campus Closed
As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston said in a statement that "This situation is fluid, ongoing and under investigation" and that it remained "in close communication with HPD, the FBI, and local and national security partners." The Chronicle also reported that The Shlenker School posted on its website that the closure came "out of an abundance of caution and after speaking with authorities." Officials said more details will be shared if and when there is new information.
Past Threats And National Context
The Anti-Defamation League has documented a sharp rise in attacks and threats against synagogues and Jewish institutions in recent years, a trend that helps explain why local communities put such a premium on security. An FBI press release shows that Congregation Beth Israel was the target of a bomb threat in 2013 that prompted a daylong closure of its school and resulted in a federal prosecution. Those earlier incidents are part of the backdrop for the close coordination between congregations, day schools, and law enforcement whenever new threats surface.
How To Stay Informed
Houston police and FBI agents are investigating the possible threat, and the Jewish Federation said it will share updates as warranted. The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston provides a "Report an Incident" portal with guidance for reporting suspicious activity and a list of security resources for institutions and families. This story will be updated as officials provide more information.
