After months of speculation and neighborhood guessing games, Quincy officials on Wednesday finally confirmed that Trader Joe’s will anchor a major mixed-use project on McConville Way. City officials say the store is part of a larger redevelopment expected to be completed in 2027, bringing a national specialty grocer into the heart of Quincy Center’s next growth phase.
The confirmation came in a city social media post and follows a recent developer filing that lists Trader Joe’s on the retail plans, according to Boston.com. The city described the document as a six page signage plan from Atlantic Development and the Hanover Company, which shows the grocer on official paperwork for the first time and includes plans for roughly 300 housing spaces, a parking garage and a Chipotle, Boston.com reported.
Medical Center And Construction Timeline
The redevelopment also comes with a major healthcare component. Beth Israel Lahey Health says it is building a 100,000 square foot ambulatory care center at 55 General McConville Way, with construction beginning in 2025 and an anticipated opening in 2027, per Beth Israel Lahey Health. The care center will be operated by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and managed by Consigli Construction, the health system added.
Where This Fits In Quincy Center's Rebuild
The Trader Joe’s reveal is the latest piece of Quincy Center’s years-long redevelopment. Work on nearby apartments and outpatient facilities was already underway last year, The Boston Business Journal reported. City leaders and developers are pitching the coordinated mix of housing, retail and health care as a way to restore foot traffic and downtown vitality.
What Shoppers Can Expect
For South Shore shoppers, the new Quincy store will join two existing Trader Joe’s locations on the peninsula in Hingham and Hanover, according to the grocer’s official store list. Officials say the presence of a national specialty grocer is likely to change shopping patterns downtown and could shift some parking and traffic needs as retail build outs move ahead.
“Trader Joe’s will be a great addition, and it’s also an incredibly important symbol of the progress we’ve made together as a community restoring the vitality of our downtown over the years,” Mayor Thomas P. Koch said in the city’s post, according to Boston.com. City officials say the McConville Way plan, which includes the grocer, housing, a parking garage and the new BIDMC care center, is expected to be completed in 2027.
