A Sunday evening ride on U.S. Route 50 ended in tragedy for a 19-year-old motorcyclist, who died after colliding with an SUV just west of Chillicothe, authorities said. The crash locked down part of the busy stretch at U.S. 50 and Veterans Parkway in Scioto Township for hours while first responders worked the scene and tried to save the young rider.
Crash details
Troopers told NBC4 the collision happened at about 8:15 p.m. when a 2022 Hyundai Palisade heading east on U.S. 50 attempted to turn left onto Veterans Parkway. As the SUV turned, it was hit on the left front by a westbound 2001 Honda VT750, sending the motorcycle off the right side of the road.
First responders rushed in and immediately began life-saving efforts at the intersection. Local scanner traffic and early reports described CPR in progress for several minutes before the rider was taken from the scene, the Scioto Valley Guardian reported. Those initial dispatches also helped pin down the exact intersection where the crash unfolded.
Victim, hospital and identification
According to NBC4, troopers later identified the rider as 19-year-old Ryan Hayes of Chillicothe. Hayes was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Officials said no further information was being released immediately as authorities worked through family notification.
Investigation and safety context
Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash, and additional details were not yet available, the Scioto Valley Guardian noted in its initial report.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol's TrafficWise bulletins point out that spring and summer tend to be peak months for motorcycle crashes. The patrol urges riders to complete Motorcycle Ohio training courses and to use full protective gear on every trip, no matter how short. The agency also posts safety guidance for both riders and drivers, reminding everyone that sharing the road with motorcycles is a two-way responsibility.
