On March 30, 2026, a 35-year-old man suddenly caught fire near a Victorville shopping center at the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Dunia Road, turning an ordinary evening into a chaotic rescue scene. Deputies and bystanders rushed in as the man, later identified by family members as Joel, was found engulfed in flames. He was airlifted to a trauma center in extremely critical condition. According to his family’s fundraiser, he is a father of three who suffered third-degree burns across roughly 90 percent of his body and has already undergone multiple life saving procedures.
Investigation details
According to a Nixle advisory from the Victorville Police Department, deputies received multiple calls about a male “engulfed in flames” at about 7:35 p.m. on March 30 and found a 35-year-old transient from Hesperia. The advisory states that deputies located items consistent with combustible materials and that a preliminary determination suggests the fire was accidental. The department’s Arson/Bomb Detail and a San Bernardino County arson investigator responded to assist, and the advisory lists Case No. DR# 172603989.
Scene footage and rescue
Video shared with Victor Valley News Group showed flames near an electrical box surrounded by shrubs close to the shopping center. Witnesses told the outlet they initially believed the area was an encampment. Several bystanders stopped to help, using a fire extinguisher before first responders arrived. Victorville City Fire requested Mercy Air and the helicopter landed in a nearby field between Kohl’s and Walmart to airlift the victim to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, the report said.
Family updates and condition
Family members created an online fundraiser that identifies the victim as Joel and details his treatment and long road to recovery. As reported by The Independent, the fundraiser says Joel has suffered third-degree burns over about 90 percent of his body, has undergone multiple surgeries including removal of damaged tissue, and remains in critical condition. Relatives say the costs of long-term burn care and rehabilitation are driving the need for donations and public updates.
What’s next
Investigators say the probe remains open and anyone with information is asked to contact the Victorville Police Station or San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Dispatch, according to the advisory. The department also provided non emergency contact numbers and an anonymous tip line for those who wish to share information about the case.
