A late-night house fire on Kanoulu Street in Waialua had neighbors grabbing a garden hose and Honolulu Fire Department crews racing in with a two-alarm response Tuesday, heavily damaging a single-story home but leaving no one hurt, officials said. Responders were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m., and neighbors worked to slow the flames until firefighters secured a water supply and launched an aggressive attack. Crews searched the structure and found no one inside, with no injuries reported.

Fire response and hazmat concerns

According to Hawaii News Now, firefighters arrived at about 10:16 p.m. to find smoke coming from the front and left side of the single-story house. While en route, crews had already seen a significant smoke column and upgraded the incident to a second-alarm assignment. Twelve units with roughly 40 personnel ultimately responded, and a hazardous-materials team joined them after reports that lithium batteries were involved.

Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior and exterior attack, then moved into overhaul operations, pulling apart portions of the structure to knock out any remaining hot spots and check for hidden fire in walls and other concealed spaces.

Storm context and local resources

The blaze broke out as North Shore communities were already on alert for a passing Kona low and forecasts of heavy rain. City officials had closed the Waialua Community Assistance Center earlier in the week as a precaution, keeping emergency teams on heightened readiness across Oʻahu, Spectrum Local News reported.

Investigation underway

The fire was declared fully extinguished at 11:22 p.m., and a fire investigator has been assigned to determine the cause and tally the damage, Hawaii News Now reports. HFD said crews completed their search to confirm the home was empty before clearing the scene. Officials plan to release more details, including damage estimates, once the investigation is complete.
