A report that a Wesley Chapel High School student might be carrying a weapon briefly put the campus on controlled status Tuesday, slowing dismissal while deputies swept the grounds. After the search turned up no weapon, officials cleared the scene and students were released in a controlled dismissal.
Staff first reported the concern and called law enforcement. Deputies responded, searched the school and held dismissal until they finished checking the campus. Once the sweep was complete, the school returned to normal operations and students were allowed to leave under closely managed procedures.
In a post on Pasco Sheriff's Office, deputies said they were called after a report that “there may be a student with a weapon.” According to the sheriff's office, deputies “quickly located the student and determined there was no weapon.” The agency said the response was taken out of an abundance of caution and that there was no safety threat to the school.
What officials said
"There is no safety threat to Wesley Chapel High School," the sheriff's office wrote, adding that deputies stayed on campus while staff carried out a controlled dismissal to make sure students left safely. School officials did not report any injuries, and the post reassured families that the situation had been resolved.
How the response fits with past incidents
Controlled-campus protocols, which include locking exterior doors and limiting movement while deputies sweep and investigate, are a standard precaution in Pasco County. Similar alerts have popped up before at Wesley Chapel schools. Earlier this year, Pasco Reporter noted a February controlled-campus alert that was later cleared, and Patch covered an October toy-gun scare at Wesley Chapel High that also ended without injuries.
What parents should know
Wesley Chapel High lists its main office at 30651 Wells Road, with a phone number of (813) 794-8700 for families who have questions. The school's website carries routine updates and contact details, and the district typically uses its messaging systems to send alerts during situations like this. Families are urged to keep an eye on those channels along with official sheriff communications for the most up-to-date information.
For now, deputies say the scene has been cleared and there is no ongoing threat at the school. Officials are asking the community to stay calm and to route any safety concerns through school staff or law enforcement.
