After more than five years on the sidelines, Cobbs Creek Golf Club in West Philadelphia officially reopened to the public on Monday, April 20, unveiling a slate of big-ticket amenities and community programs. The early relaunch revolves around the Lincoln Financial Center, a heated, two-tier driving range with Toptracer-equipped bays, a pro shop and an on-site restaurant, paired with a TGR Design "Q School" short course. It is the first visible piece of roughly $180 million in public-private fundraising and construction aimed at restoring the storied 350-acre course and building an education-focused campus around it.
Ribbon-cutting and community focus
City and project leaders marked the comeback with a ribbon-cutting that brought out Mayor Cherelle Parker, foundation leaders, Lincoln Financial executives and other community partners. "To have a day like today where we are actually opening this facility with the Mayor and all these supporters is pretty sweet," Cobbs Creek Foundation president Jeff Shanahan said, according to First Call Golf.
Learning lab and youth programs
Steps away from the range, the campus now includes the 30,000-square-foot Smilow Woodland TGR Learning Lab, which offers free STEAM classes, tutoring and career-readiness programs for local students. A 10th-grade student told reporters the lab has expanded his sense of what is possible and "given me an opportunity to chase my dreams," FOX 29 Philadelphia reported. The TGR Foundation describes the lab as the first completed phase of the Cobbs Creek Golf & Education Campus and says it is designed to tie classroom programming directly to on-site golf opportunities.
Creek restoration and funding
The overhaul of Cobbs Creek is not just about golf. It also includes stream and wetlands restoration intended to tackle the chronic flooding that helped force the course’s closure in 2020. Mayor Parker announced a $9.1 million city commitment for creek restoration, and project leaders say the foundation plans to invest roughly $30 million in waterway improvements as part of the broader $180 million campaign, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Phased reopening and future events
The campus is coming back in stages. The Lincoln Financial Center and the TGR "Q School" short course are among the first pieces to open, while the fully restored 18-hole Olde Course is targeted for completion by fall 2027 and a nine-hole Karakung course is planned for 2028. Industry coverage and project materials outline that timeline and the short-course design, and Golf Course Industry reported the short course will open this spring. FOX 29 Philadelphia noted that the PGA has already held early discussions about staging a future event at Cobbs Creek.
Amenities, management and local impact
Inside the Lincoln Financial Center, golfers will find 68 Toptracer-equipped bays, a pro shop, the Little Horse Tavern and a 200-person event space. The campus is managed by Troon, according to industry materials. The Cobbs Creek Foundation and its partners expect revenue from the range, food and beverage and events to help support the learning lab and cover long-term course maintenance, First Call Golf reported.
How to visit
Bay reservations and tee times are already in high demand as Cobbs Creek heads into its first full season since restoration work began. For bookings, operating hours and the latest list of available amenities, visit the Cobbs Creek Golf site for tee times and bay reservations.
For West Philadelphia, the reopening restores a major public recreation hub and tests a model that blends sports facilities with education programs and environmental repairs. Project leaders say neighbors can expect new features to roll out over the next two years as restoration continues and community offerings grow.
