The Minnesota Wild walked into American Airlines Center on Saturday and left a mark, throttling the Dallas Stars 6-1 to open the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy each scored twice, while Kirill Kaprizov piled up a goal and two assists. The decisive win hands Minnesota a 1-0 series lead as both teams turn quickly toward Game 2 on Monday in Dallas.
Physical play sets the tone
Minnesota leaned hard into its physical identity, out-hitting Dallas 49-39. Yakov Trenin set a franchise postseason record with 13 hits, and Marcus Foligno added seven. The Wild’s heavy fourth line and grind-it-out approach up and down the lineup helped them sustain pressure while mostly staying out of the penalty box. Only Nick Foligno was whistled for a penalty, a holding call late in the third period, according to the Star Tribune.
Top guns carry the offense
The Wild’s best players did exactly what they are paid to do. Joel Eriksson Ek struck twice on the power play, Kaprizov racked up a goal and two assists, and Boldy finished with two goals and an assist. Eriksson Ek opened the scoring with a one-timer 5:35 into the first period, then Kaprizov made it 2-0 just 56 seconds into the second, per NHL.com.
Wallstedt steady in his playoff debut
Rookie goaltender Jesper Wallstedt handled his first postseason start with composure, turning aside 26 shots in the win. At the other end, Dallas starter Jake Oettinger finished with 23 saves, as reported by FOX Sports. Wallstedt’s calm presence behind Minnesota’s hard-checking skaters helped prevent the Stars from building much in the way of sustained pressure in the latter half of the game.
What’s next
The Wild now carry a 1-0 lead into Game 2 on Monday in Dallas, but no one in Minnesota’s room is pretending the job is close to done. “Ekky was good tonight,” coach John Hynes said, while Boldy noted that “everybody had an impact in the game,” according to the Star Tribune.
