Yesterday's drive on Woodward Avenue in Pontiac turned deadly when a 59-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed on the southbound side of the road just south of South Boulevard. The crash happened around 9:30 a.m., and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials: Driver Passed Sobriety Tests, Crash Team Takes Over
Oakland County deputies said the driver, a 37-year-old Waterford Township man behind the wheel of a 2026 BMW X5, stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors after the driver passed field sobriety tests, according to WXYZ. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation. Officials have not yet released the name of the pedestrian.
Busy Woodward Stretch Under Construction Where Crash Occurred
The collision happened on a heavily traveled stretch of southbound Woodward Avenue just south of South Boulevard, a corridor that has been dealing with lane closures and reconstruction work as state and county agencies reconfigure the roadway and intersections to improve traffic flow and crossings, as FOX 2 Detroit reported. The multi-lane arterial feeds directly into downtown Pontiac and carries significant commuter traffic during morning hours. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable in areas where crosswalks and sidewalks are limited.
Deadly Pattern of Crashes Has Deputies on Alert
This latest death adds to a troubling pattern of fatal pedestrian incidents in Pontiac. That spike pushed Oakland County deputies to step up saturation patrols at several traffic hotspots last year, according to reporting by WXYZ. Those targeted operations focus on speeding, stop-sign violations and unsafe crossings in an effort to rein in reckless driving.
How the Crash Fits a Bigger Safety Problem
State and national numbers show this is part of a wider safety crisis for people on foot. The Governors Highway Safety Association's review of preliminary 2024 data found pedestrian deaths remain elevated and are disproportionately concentrated in places without sidewalks or after dark, and it calls for a combination of enforcement and infrastructure changes to bring the numbers down. GHSA's analysis also flags speeding and vehicle type as key factors in many deadly pedestrian strikes.
Investigation Ongoing, No Charges Announced
The fatal Pontiac crash remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit, and no charges have been announced. Investigators can be reached through the Oakland County Sheriff's Office; the sheriff's headquarters at 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac is listed on the county website, Oakland County.
