Wooster is grieving the loss of Maddox Graser, a Wooster High School sophomore who died after what school officials described as a severe medical emergency. Friends, teammates and teachers remember Graser as a bright student and dedicated athlete, and the shock of his death has rippled through the close-knit community. School leaders say counseling and support are in place as the family and district ask for privacy.
District statement
In a statement to WKYC, Wooster City Schools called Graser “an outstanding student, athlete, and friend who will be greatly missed by our school community” and asked the public to keep his family in their thoughts. The district said the high school’s main office is collecting cards and other memorial items for the family, and that counseling resources are available for students and staff. Officials again urged the community to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.
How it unfolded
According to The Daily Record, Graser became suddenly ill late Tuesday after Wooster’s 10-0 home win over West Holmes. He was first taken to a local hospital, then life-flighted to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he was treated in the pediatric ICU. Wooster’s athletic roster lists him as a sophomore, reflecting his role across the school’s sports programs. The sudden medical emergency left classmates and coaches searching for answers while rallying around his family.
Support and memorials
Wooster High School will be open Sunday afternoon to provide extra access for students and families seeking support, and counselors will be on hand to help students process the loss, the district told WKYC. Principal Margaret Davis wrote that the district expects students to experience a wide range of emotions and emphasized that supporting them is a top priority. The school’s main office is serving as a collection point for cards and memorial notes, officials said.
Community response
An online fundraiser created for the family has drawn hundreds of donations, with the GoFundMe page “Help Support Maddox Graser and His Family” pulling in significant contributions to help cover urgent medical and family expenses. GoFundMe lists the organizer and the running total of funds raised. The Daily Record also reported that Wooster’s second game of a scheduled doubleheader at West Holmes was postponed as the emergency unfolded.
District officials say they will continue to share updates and resources through school channels and again asked the community to honor the family’s privacy while support systems are put in place. School counselors and staff remain available during school hours for students who need more immediate help.
