A boy died Thursday after a fall near Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe, according to El Dorado County authorities. Deputies and rescue crews reached the child roughly 400 yards from the Eagle Falls trailhead and immediately began life-saving efforts. Officials say the boy did not survive. His age and identity have not yet been released as the investigation continues.
What Happened
First responders were called to the Eagle Falls Trailhead at about 2:30 p.m. for a reported climbing accident, according to CBS Sacramento. Deputies found a boy about 400 yards from the trailhead who appeared to have been rock climbing when he fell, suffering traumatic injuries. Crews tried to save him at the scene, but the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office says he died from those injuries.
A Familiar Danger at Eagle Falls
Emerald Bay and the Eagle Falls area are among the most photographed spots around Lake Tahoe, drawing crowds for their waterfalls, granite walls, and sweeping overlooks. That beauty comes with serious risk. The steep terrain and slick rocks have been factors in several fatal accidents in recent years, as documented by reporting in SFGATE and the Tahoe Daily Tribune, prompting repeated warnings from park and fire officials.
Investigation Underway
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of the fall and has not released further details, according to CBS Sacramento. Authorities have not said whether any trail closures are in effect or whether they are seeking additional witnesses.
Officials Urge Extra Caution
Fire and park officials have for years urged visitors to stay off wet rocks and away from exposed ledges, especially during spring runoff when water levels and currents are stronger. Earlier coverage by ABC7 and other local outlets has stressed that waterfalls and river pools can look calm from a distance yet still pose a deadly threat up close.
