The search for contraband at the Sumter County Jail ended with one of its own behind bars, after investigators say detention officer Javian Quintrell Blake bought and smuggled cellphones, cigarettes and makeshift weapons into the Americus-area lockup. Blake now faces a felony charge tied to the alleged smuggling operation, and the arrest has sparked fresh scrutiny of security inside the facility as the sheriff's office keeps digging into the case.
Sumter County Sheriff Eric D. Bryant said his team seized cell phones, cigarettes and small handmade weapons during an April 21 search of the jail, and that the probe led to arrests in the case, according to WTVM. In a Facebook post, Bryant wrote that investigators arrested Blake last week and that "other arrests are imminent," as reported by CBS News Atlanta.
Investigation and charges
Blake is charged with possessing and/or procuring items prohibited by inmates, a felony, the sheriff's office has said, according to WSB-TV. Investigators with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office say Blake bought cell phones and cigarettes and smuggled them into the jail in exchange for payment. The April 21 search also turned up small handmade weapons and other contraband, according to the sheriff.
What the law says
Under Georgia law it is unlawful to obtain or furnish prohibited items to inmates. O.C.G.A. § 42-5-18 makes supplying weapons, telecommunications devices, tobacco and other unauthorized articles a felony that carries mandatory minimum penalties and can result in prison time of up to 10 years, according to the state code, Georgia Code § 42-5-18.
Local pattern
The latest arrest lands on the heels of an earlier contraband investigation at the same jail. In December 2024 local authorities charged 16 people, including a detention officer, after a long investigation that targeted cellphones and other contraband inside the facility, WALB reported. Sheriff Bryant has said he enforces a zero-tolerance policy for staff who bring contraband into the jail, and Blake's arrest appears to be another test of that stance.
What’s next
Bryant wrote that he will release more information as the inquiry continues and that additional arrests are expected, according to CBS News Atlanta.
