Parts of the Anapra subdivision went dry on Tuesday after a water main gave out, forcing Camino Real Regional Utility Authority crews to shut off service while they scrambled to isolate the break. The emergency cutoff left taps quiet across the neighborhood and could temporarily ripple into nearby areas until the line is fully repaired.
CRRUA advisory and water guidance
In a public notice, Camino Real Regional Utility Authority said crews were responding to an urgent main break and that a follow-up alert will go out once the system is back online. The utility cautioned that customers may see discolored or cloudy water when service returns and said that it should clear up within 24 hours.
Residents were urged to run cold water from their faucets for several minutes if discoloration shows up and to hold off on doing laundry until the water runs clear. The advice is meant to keep sediment from staining clothes while the system flushes itself out.
Road closures and local impact
The City of Sunland Park reported that Calle Obregón is temporarily closed between Calle Morroco and Calle Carousel while work is underway, with no estimated time yet for full restoration, according to the city’s utility updates page. Drivers are being asked to steer clear of the work zone and use alternate routes until crews finish the fix.
Local coverage first flagged the outage on Tuesday and amplified the utility’s guidance to households dealing with the shutoff, per KTSM.
Older pipes, recent fixes and funding
Anapra sits on some of CRRUA’s oldest distribution lines, including small 4- and 6-inch mains that planning documents show are lined up for upgrades. That aging hardware makes targeted repairs a familiar sight in the neighborhood.
City and utility officials have been trying to catch up with the infrastructure backlog. Sunland Park approved $1.2 million for tank rehabilitation projects that include the Anapra tank, as outlined in a CRRUA release. Earlier this year, the utility also reached a settlement with the New Mexico Environment Department over water safety violations, according to KRWG. That combination of older mains and stepped-up repair and compliance work helps explain why crews moved quickly to shut the system down and tackle the break.
Practical steps for residents
Residents are advised not to run washing machines until their water runs clear and to let cold faucets run for several minutes if they notice discoloration, echoing the instructions in the utility notice. If cloudy or discolored water persists beyond 24 hours or if customers have other concerns, the city notice directs them to contact CRRUA customer service at (575) 332-1076. Officials said they will share updates on the utility’s and city’s online channels as repairs wrap up.
