A Carnival Liberty passenger died after reportedly climbing over his stateroom balcony and going overboard while the New Orleans-based cruise ship was sailing in the Caribbean. Crew members pulled the man from the water and medical staff tried to resuscitate him, but he was later pronounced dead. Fellow travelers said he had been sailing with family when the incident unfolded.
Ship crew pulled man from water, Carnival says
A Carnival spokesperson told local reporters that the guest appeared to have climbed over a stateroom balcony before going into the water as the Liberty traveled from Celebration Key to Nassau, according to WDSU. Shipboard teams launched a search, located the passenger in the water and brought him back on board. Despite their efforts to revive him, he did not survive. Carnival said it is providing support to the man’s family.
Frantic rescue effort described by passengers
Passengers and early coverage from on board described a tense scramble as crew members rushed to respond. A life ring was thrown into the water while staff scanned the sea for any sign of the man. As reported by TMZ, the passenger moved in and out of view during the rescue attempt and had been traveling with relatives. Video and posts from people on the Liberty later circulated online as the ship’s teams worked to bring him back.
Liberty’s New Orleans homeport and Bahamas run
The Carnival Liberty is homeported in New Orleans and typically operates seven-day, round-trip itineraries that include calls in the Bahamas at Celebration Key and Nassau, according to CruiseMapper. The ship was sailing that route when the overboard incident was reported.
Another recent death linked to Celebration Key
The tragedy comes on the heels of the death of an 88-year-old American woman who drove a mobility scooter off a pier at Carnival’s Celebration Key on May 9, officials said. The Royal Bahamas Police Force and local reporting have stated that investigators believe she struck her head on the hull before going into the water, and Carnival confirmed that crews recovered her before she was pronounced dead, according to FOX 13. The two incidents in short succession have fueled fresh concern among passengers about safety at the private Bahamian destination.
Why man-overboard cases so often turn deadly
According to The Points Guy, Cruise Lines International Association data shows 212 man-overboard incidents from 2009-2019, with only 48 people rescued. Experts cited in that reporting say the low survival rate typically stems from a combination of impact injuries from the fall, cold water and the basic challenge of spotting a single person in open ocean conditions. Quick detection and an immediate response are crucial, which is no small task even for well-trained shipboard teams.
Investigation underway and a somber ship
Carnival and local authorities have said investigations are active and that the coroner will determine the official cause of death. The cruise line is cooperating with officials and providing support to the affected families, according to local reporting. Passengers on the Liberty described a subdued mood on board after the man was recovered, and the back-to-back losses tied to Carnival’s Bahamas operations have intensified scrutiny of safety practices at the line’s private destination and on its ships.
