A Knoxville man is facing roughly 50 child sex charges after a Bean Station Police Department investigation that stretched over several months, authorities said. The indictment lists one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, one count of especially aggravated exploitation of a minor and dozens of statutory rape counts tied to an alleged position of authority. The accusations cover multiple years and involve a victim who was a teenager at the time of the alleged offenses.

According to WBIR, the suspect is 48-year-old Bryan L. Cash of Knoxville, who was arrested on May 4. Bean Station police said a report filed with the department on Feb. 10 triggered the original investigation, which detectives later expanded, ultimately leading to the arrest and the current slate of charges. WBIR reported that officials are holding back additional details because of the sensitivity of the case.

Investigation timeline and allegations

As reported by WVLT, investigators say the alleged abuse occurred between October 2020 and August 2023. During that period, the victim was between 15 and 18 years old, according to police. Bean Station Chief John McMurray told WVLT that his department treats crimes against children as a top priority and said investigators are focused on supporting the victim and the victim’s family as the case moves forward.

How officers located and arrested Cash

WBIR reported that Bean Station detectives worked with outside agencies to track down Cash. In a department release, police thanked a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office ICAC detective and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office warrant division for their help in locating and arresting him. Authorities have not said where Cash was taken into custody or whether a bond amount has been set.

What the charges mean

Under Tennessee law, “statutory rape by an authority figure” applies to adults who use a position of trust or authority to engage in sexual penetration with 13- to 17-year-olds. “Continuous sexual abuse of a child” is charged when prosecutors allege repeated sexual offenses over a period of time. Court opinions and statute summaries in Tennessee court records describe those crimes as serious felonies that can carry mandatory prison sentences and sex offender registration if a defendant is convicted.

Bean Station police told reporters the investigation is still active and said they will continue to work with and support the victim and family, according to WVLT. As in all criminal cases, the allegations against Cash are accusations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Authorities say they will release additional information through official channels as the case progresses. Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact the Bean Station Police Department or local law enforcement.
