A wandering black bear turned a quiet stretch of Towamencin Township into breaking news on Tuesday, prompting a police response and a clear message to residents: give the animal space while the pros handle it.
The bear was spotted in the area of Detwiler and Gehman roads, where officers coordinated with the Pennsylvania Game Commission in an effort to safely capture and relocate it, according to CBS Philadelphia. Residents were urged not to approach the bear and to call 911 immediately if they saw it so authorities could move in safely.
What wildlife officials say
The Pennsylvania Game Commission notes that black bears typically steer clear of people, but they will nose around yards, parks and neighborhoods if there is easy food to be found, especially in spring and early summer. To cut down on those surprise visits, the agency advises removing temptations such as bird feeders, unsecured trash and outdoor pet food, and keeping children and pets indoors until wildlife crews can respond, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
Regional sightings
The Towamencin sighting comes on the heels of other recent bear activity in the region. Earlier this month, police in South Whitehall Township captured a black bear near Lehigh County soccer fields, as reported in Hoodline's coverage of the bear captured near the soccer fields.
How to stay safe
Authorities stress that if you see the bear, you should not try to get closer for a better look or a photo. Keep children and pets indoors while officials are responding, and call 911 right away for any active sightings so police can coordinate with wildlife officers. For non-emergencies and to prevent repeat encounters, the Game Commission recommends securing garbage and taking down bird feeders, per the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
