Thursday morning shopping at the Oxford Walmart turned into a full evacuation after a caller claimed a bomb had been planted inside the store at 5720 College Corner Pike. Shoppers and employees were rushed out, officers rushed in, and K-9 teams swept the building and parking lot while fire crews waited on standby. By late morning, police had cleared the scene and the store was allowed to reopen, with investigators now working to track down whoever made the threat.
According to the City of Oxford, Ohio - Division of Police, Butler County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a call reporting that a bomb was inside the Walmart. Employees immediately began evacuating customers while officers established a secure perimeter around the property. During the sweep, K-9 teams detected what police described as “signs of an explosive device,” and Miami University Police K-9 personnel joined Oxford officers on scene. The Oxford Fire Department was dispatched as a precaution.
Police say the building was fully cleared and the Walmart was allowed to reopen at 11:40 a.m. The case has been turned over to the Oxford Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit, which is handling the follow-up work.
Bomb Threat Hits Amid National Wave Of Hoax Calls
The scare in Oxford comes as authorities around the country deal with a spike in hoax bomb and active-shooter calls that have emptied zoos, schools, retail stores, and other public spaces, tying up officers and draining local budgets. The Associated Press has tracked a nationwide surge in so-called “swatting” incidents, a trend federal and local investigators warn can put first responders and bystanders in real danger while costing communities thousands of dollars per call.
As reported by WLWT, officials say every such report has to be treated as potentially credible until investigators can prove otherwise, which means scenes like Thursday morning’s evacuation at Walmart are likely to continue until the people behind these calls are identified and charged.
Investigation, Tip Line And How Locals Can Help
Oxford police say their Criminal Investigations Unit is leading the inquiry and are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department tip line at 513-524-5268. In its public statement, the department thanked residents and shoppers for cooperating with officers during the evacuation and search, and confirmed there were no reported injuries.
Anyone who noticed suspicious activity in or around the College Corner Pike store Thursday morning is urged to reach out to investigators, according to the City of Oxford, Ohio - Division of Police.
What A Hoax Threat Could Cost The Caller
Under Ohio law, making or spreading a bogus bomb threat that forces evacuations or sparks serious public alarm is not a harmless prank. Offenders can face charges such as “inducing panic” or “making false alarms,” which range from misdemeanors to felonies depending on the level of harm and the financial impact on a community. Courts can also order offenders to pay restitution to cover the cost of police, fire, and other emergency responses. The statute spelling out “inducing panic” penalties can be found in Ohio Revised Code Section 2917.31.
For now, the Oxford Walmart is back to normal operations, but police say the investigation is very much active and that more details will be released as they are confirmed. Officials continue to stress that hoax threats carry real-world risks and real price tags, and they are urging community members to report any information that could help close this case.
