A Brockton resident just turned a casual stop at a neighborhood convenience store into a life-changing payday, claiming a $1 million prize on a $10 scratch ticket. The winning Strike It Rich ticket was confirmed by Massachusetts Lottery staff, handing one local player a seven-figure windfall in what has been a busy stretch for instant-ticket wins across the state.
According to the Massachusetts Lottery, Strike It Rich launched on May 12 and sells for $10 a ticket. The game advertises six $1,000,000 prizes among its top awards and also includes larger $4,000,000 top prizes. With this latest claim, one of those million-dollar payouts is now officially off the board.
As reported by MassLive, the winning $1,000,000 ticket was sold at the Grab N Go in Brockton and later brought to the Massachusetts State Lottery for payment. The same report noted that another player scored a $100,000 prize on a ticket sold at a Pride gas station in Holyoke, and that at least 582 prizes worth $600 or more were won or claimed statewide on Thursday.
Retailers Get a Cut
Big wins do not just change life for the players. Stores that sell high-value tickets typically collect a bonus from the Lottery on top of their usual commissions. For example, when a $25 million scratch ticket was claimed in 2023, the retailer that sold it received a $50,000 bonus, according to WCVB. The extra cash is meant to reward retailers and encourage them to handle major wins carefully.
What Winners Should Do
Lottery officials advise winners to sign the back of any winning ticket immediately and stash it somewhere safe before heading in to claim larger prizes. The Massachusetts State Lottery maintains a daily list of winning tickets worth $600 or more and outlines how to claim prizes on its website; details are posted on the Massachusetts Lottery site. For wins at this level, the Lottery's claims office steps in to verify the ticket, process tax forms and finalize whether the payout comes as a lump sum or in installments.
The identity of the Brockton winner has not been made public, and the Lottery has not said whether the $1 million will arrive all at once or over time. Local retailers say even a single headline-making win can bring a wave of curious customers through the door, and across the region plenty of players are taking a second look at their pockets as instant games keep dropping big prizes in Massachusetts.
