A late-night game in the West Farms section of the Bronx turned deadly Sunday when a 29-year-old man was stabbed outside a neighborhood basketball court and later died at the hospital, according to police.
Police and initial details
Officers arrived around 9:40 p.m. to a court on West Farms Road and found the victim with multiple stab wounds, News 12 The Bronx reported. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators from the NYPD homicide squad and the local precinct spent the night canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, according to the outlet. Police have not yet announced any arrests as detectives continue to chase down leads.
Two deadly incidents minutes apart
Less than five minutes before the stabbing, officers had responded to a separate shooting in the Melrose section that left a 34-year-old man dead, as reported by WABC/ABC7. The station notes that the two incidents appear to be unrelated and that no arrests have been made in either case.
The back-to-back killings prompted additional detectives to flood the borough as investigators pulled surveillance video and spoke with anyone who might have seen or heard something.
Neighborhood context
The stabbing adds to a run of recent deadly incidents in parts of the Bronx, including a shooting the previous night that left another 29-year-old man dead on Haviland Avenue. Hoodline's earlier report on the 29-year-old killed on Haviland Avenue noted that even as citywide shootings are down compared with last year, certain Bronx neighborhoods are seeing concentrated spikes in lethal violence.
How to help investigators
Anyone with information about the stabbing is urged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit a tip online. Officials say residents who have cellphone video or doorbell camera footage from around the time of the attack should preserve it and share it with detectives.
Hoodline will update this story as police release more details or announce an arrest. For now, tips and eyewitness accounts remain critical to moving the investigation forward.
