Pre-dawn gunfire jolted a Brownsville block awake early Saturday, as police say shots were fired outside 682 Ralph Avenue and eight people were taken into custody for questioning. Officers responding to a 911 call around 3 a.m. found 14 shell casings scattered at the scene, according to News 12 New York. No injuries were reported, and detectives say the investigation is still wide open.
Police response and evidence recovered
Detectives say they moved in after the 3 a.m. call, canvassing the area around Ralph Avenue and recovering the 14 casings. As reported by News 12 New York, two people were seen running from the spot where shots were fired and disappearing into a nearby building on East New York Avenue.
Eight individuals were brought in for questioning as part of the early-morning sweep. Police say no arrests have been made, they have not released any suspect descriptions, and a possible motive remains unknown. The case is still active as investigators work to piece together what triggered the gunfire.
Brownsville's recent run of gun violence
Saturday’s shooting comes on the heels of a rough stretch for Brownsville, where residents have already been grappling with a string of incidents this month, including a deadly attack on Blake Avenue that was detailed in Brooklyn teen gunned down on Blake Avenue. The neighborhood has been a long-running focus for gun violence crackdowns.
In April, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced indictments charging 36 alleged members of two rival neighborhood crews after a multi-year probe into dozens of shootings. Prosecutors said the sweeping case was designed to tamp down retaliatory gunfire in and around Brownsville. That long-running effort has kept detectives zeroed in on local housing complexes and known hotspot blocks.
Investigators ask for tips as probe continues
With no arrests announced and key questions lingering, the NYPD says the investigation is ongoing, according to News 12 New York. Authorities have not released additional information about the eight people taken in for questioning.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS, as outlined by the city's Crime Stoppers program.
