Burger-chan has quietly slipped its second Houston outpost into the Heights, soft-opening in mid-May on Yale Street and bringing its cult-favorite, Asian-inspired smash burgers to a roughly 3,000-square-foot space with a full bar in tow. The new spot, in a storefront that previously housed a Filipino restaurant, marks a bigger stage for the customizable burger operation and its growing fanbase.

According to Community Impact, the Heights location at 506 Yale St., Ste. E officially opened May 14 and clocks in at about 3,000 square feet. The kitchen is set to serve until 10 p.m. on Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, while the bar keeps pouring later, and a seven-day happy hour runs 3-6 p.m. daily.

Origins and the build-your-own menu

The couple behind Burger-chan trace the concept back to 2016 in the Greenway Plaza food court, later expanding to a Galleria-area spot that evolved into the flagship, per the restaurant's own website. The menu revolves around a build-your-own setup with choices for patty, bun, cheese and sauces, plus hot dogs, falafel and sides that have earned steady local praise. The Galleria location remains open while the Heights outpost takes on expanded dinner and bar service.

New partners and a neighborhood vote

New majority partners Roveen Abante and Ryan Stewart, who took over operating duties last year, told CultureMap Houston they turned to followers to vote on where to expand, and the Heights came out on top. “For longtime fans, nothing about the food is changing,” one partner told CultureMap, with the team saying the larger footprint lets them scale the concept without tinkering with the core menu. The partners have also signaled that more locations could be on the way once the new kitchen and bar hit their stride.

A bigger bar with Japanese-inspired cocktails

The Houston Chronicle reports the Yale Street location comes with a more extensive cocktail list that features yuzu-flavored, sake-based drinks alongside a selection of Japanese beers and expanded indoor and outdoor seating. The Chronicle also notes the space previously housed Be More Pacific, which closed in March, and that the Heights bar keeps pouring later than the kitchen on weekends.

Menus, online ordering and updated hours are posted on Burger-chan's website, which also lists the Galleria address and delivery options. Expect dinner crowds and a lively happy hour as the Heights bar settles in, with the team signaling plans to grow the brand while hanging on to the recipes that built its following in the first place.
