A Blue Origin New Glenn rocket exploded on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral late Thursday during a hot-fire engine test, sending a towering fireball into the night sky and rattling homes along Florida's Space Coast. The vehicle was destroyed where it stood, and emergency crews stayed on scene well into the night. Officials say no one was injured, and a multiagency investigation is already in motion.

Blue Origin confirmed the mishap in a post on X, labeling it an "anomaly" and noting that all personnel had been accounted for, according to the AP. Founder Jeff Bezos said it was "too early to know the root cause" and vowed that the company would rebuild, as investigators began pulling telemetry and video from the pad for review.

What engineers were testing

The operation was a hot-fire, also known as a static-fire, test - a standard prelaunch check that ignites the rocket's engines while the vehicle stays bolted to the pad. The countdown reportedly included firing New Glenn’s seven methane-fueled BE-4 first-stage engines, and the rocket had been slated to carry a batch of Amazon LEO internet satellites on a flight planned for next week, according to CBS News. Amateur and professional launch-watch videos showed flames at the base of the booster that quickly ballooned into a massive fireball.

Pad damage, debris and the investigation

Early aerial imagery and drone flyovers show heavy damage at Launch Complex 36, with the erector-gantry and at least one lightning tower apparently destroyed. Those visuals point to extensive pad repairs ahead, Space.com reports. Space Launch Delta 45 said the Eastern Range remains mission capable, and that range personnel and Blue Origin teams are combing through data to determine the exact cause.

Officials also warned coastal residents that hazardous wreckage may wash ashore in the coming days and urged anyone who encounters suspected parts not to touch them, but instead report the finds to local authorities, according to local reporting by WFTV. Blue Origin and range officials say recovery teams will secure any debris so investigators can preserve evidence safely.

Reaction and what comes next

Company leaders have pledged to track down the root cause and rebuild, while rival executives and observers offered brief condolences online. Elon Musk replied to Bezos’ post with the Latin phrase "Ad astra per aspera," as noted by regional reporting from KIRO7. NASA’s administrator said the agency will work with its partners to support a thorough investigation and assess any mission impacts, per the AP.

No Amazon LEO satellites were on board for the test, but the loss of Blue Origin’s sole New Glenn pad immediately clouds the company’s short-term manifest and its role in upcoming lunar cargo and lander flights. Regulators and federal agencies will join the probe, and officials have not yet provided a timeline for repairs or a return to flight.
