A car slammed into the side of an apartment building in Charlotte's Lower South End on Wednesday, tearing open a massive hole in the exterior but leaving behind no confirmed serious injuries. The dramatic damage immediately drew a heavy emergency response and plenty of stares from the street.
According to WCNC, the vehicle punched through the side of the 5Line apartment complex. Early chatter about possible injuries was later not confirmed. WCNC's on-scene video shows crews clustered around a gaping opening in the wall where the car made impact.
Where It Happened
The crash hit one of the buildings in the 5Line community in Lower South End, a part of Charlotte that has seen a wave of new apartment and retail projects. The property's own online materials describe 5Line as a Lower South End residential community with on-site amenities for tenants, and the complex's listing places it squarely in that neighborhood.
Damage and Response
Photos and video from the scene show a sizable chunk of the building's exterior ripped away, debris scattered across the sidewalk, and framing exposed to anyone walking by. Officials quickly blocked off the immediate area while investigators began sorting out how the vehicle ended up in the side of the building, WCNC reported.
Similar Crashes in the Region
This is not the only case in recent months where a vehicle has plowed into a home in the region. On May 22 in Gastonia, a car smashed into a duplex living room and left one unit uninhabitable, according to WSOC. Incidents like these highlight the danger when cars veer off the roadway near residential buildings.
Authorities have not yet said what caused the South End crash and have asked anyone with information to contact local police. This story will be updated if officials or property managers release additional details.
