Police say an early Friday raid along Carrick's busy Brownsville Road corridor pulled a small arsenal and a stash of heroin off the street, with at least two people taken into custody as part of an ongoing neighborhood investigation.
Seized haul and arrests
According to TribLIVE, Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz said officers were investigating the 1600 block of Brownsville Road early Friday when they arrested 24-year-old Mello Williams and 19-year-old Matyus Stewart. "The investigation is ongoing," Cruz said.
Brownsville Road context
Brownsville Road, a long commercial spine through Carrick, has seen its share of violence and police activity in recent years. The corridor was the scene of a late-night shooting reported along the strip last July, and residents and business owners have repeatedly raised alarms about safety along the stretch.
Charges and evidence recovered
Investigators executing search warrants said they recovered seven guns, four bundles of heroin and two bricks of heroin, along with cocaine, marijuana and more than $5,600 in cash. Williams faces multiple counts, including persons not to possess firearms, carrying firearms without a license, fleeing or attempting to elude police, possession with intent to deliver, and other related charges. Stewart was charged with carrying firearms without a license and possession of controlled substances, according to TribLIVE. Online court documents did not list attorneys for either suspect.
Data shows persistent local problems
City police statistics underscore that Carrick's issues with drugs and guns are not new. The neighborhood logged five drug-narcotics violations and seven weapon-law violations in 2023, reflecting ongoing enforcement challenges, according to the Bureau of Police's 2023 annual report. Those figures track with periodic busts and focused enforcement efforts along commercial stretches like Brownsville Road.
Authorities said the probe remains active and declined to release additional details Friday. City officials did not immediately provide further comment.
