A man was taken into custody Thursday after a pair of west side search warrants turned up hard drugs and a pile of cash that Cleveland police say is tied to suspected trafficking. Officers with the First District vice unit carried out an initial sweep that investigators say uncovered suspected heroin and cocaine, along with roughly $12,500 believed to be drug proceeds. A follow-up search at a related location, investigators say, is where things really escalated, with officers reportedly finding more than $100,000 in cash linked to alleged trafficking.
According to FOX8, the first search recovered about 60 grams of heroin and roughly 8 ounces of cocaine. The later warrant at a connected address yielded the bulk of the money, which Cleveland police tied to suspected drug sales. Police say the person taken into custody will have their case presented to a grand jury.
Part of a string of west-side enforcement actions
The seizure comes amid a run of recent enforcement efforts on Cleveland's west side. In early May, officers executed another operation that turned up narcotics, a firearm, and about $15,000 in cash, underscoring an uptick in warrants in neighborhoods struggling with street-level dealing, as reported by WOIO.
Legal process ahead
Police told FOX8 the suspect's case will be routed to a grand jury, where prosecutors will decide whether to file charges. Large cash seizures in drug probes can move into criminal or civil forfeiture, and a 2017 review by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General flagged shortcomings in oversight of such seizures. The report noted that forfeiture actions sometimes went forward without related criminal charges, raising civil-liberty concerns, per DOJ OIG.
Authorities did not immediately release the suspect's name or detail any charges. Investigators say lab testing of the seized substances, along with the grand-jury review, will determine the next steps.
