A late-night fire ripped through downtown Sauk Centre on Monday, tearing into several businesses and multiple upstairs apartments along Main Street as firefighters from across the region raced in to help. An officer on routine patrol spotted smoke and flames just before midnight, started clearing tenants from second-floor units, and called in reinforcements while crews moved in to secure the block and assist residents.
The officer’s quick actions helped with the evacuations
According to KSTP, a Sauk Centre police officer on routine patrol in the 300 block of Main Street South noticed flames and smoke pouring from a two-story building just before midnight. The officer radioed for help, then, with another officer, began going door to door to evacuate residents from the second-floor apartments while the Sauk Centre Fire Department made entry to attack the blaze from inside.
Regional crews answered the call
As reported by KSTP, five fire departments ultimately responded and worked through the night to get the fire under control. Three businesses and five apartments sustained significant damage, according to the station, but there were no reported injuries.
Damage, displacement and investigation
Per WJON, the State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate how the blaze started, and officials have not yet released a damage estimate. WJON notes that agencies assisting on scene included fire departments from Melrose, Long Prairie, Elrosa and Osakis, along with the Stearns County and Todd County sheriff’s offices, Sauk Centre Ambulance and the Minnesota State Patrol. Authorities also helped arrange accommodations for residents displaced by the fire.
How it was discovered
KSTP reports that a police dash-camera image shows the moment the officer first spotted the fire at about 11:50 p.m. The officer immediately called for backup, then began evacuating people from the building, a response the outlet says likely kept the incident from becoming even more devastating. Fire crews remained on scene into the following day while investigators began their work.
