A weekend picnic at Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta turned terrifying for one woman who says a stranger attacked, sexually violated and robbed her in broad daylight. The victim, who identified herself as Unique Nelson, later pulled out her phone and recorded video of officers arresting a man at the scene. Authorities have charged the suspect with public indecency, robbery and simple battery.
What happened
Nelson told Channel 2 Action News she was sitting on a picnic blanket with friends when a man suddenly grabbed her bag and jewelry, then exposed himself and assaulted her. Nearby teenagers stepped in and chased the man until officers arrived. Nelson kept recording as police moved in and placed a handcuffed suspect into custody.
WSB‑TV reports the man was identified as Ajani Michael and that jail records list multiple prior arrests in Fulton County dating back to 2020.
Victim speaks out
"I was attacked, robbed and sexually violated," Nelson told Channel 2 Action News, explaining that she chose to speak publicly to warn others about what can happen even in busy public spaces. The short clip she filmed shows officers escorting a handcuffed man as onlookers watch from nearby, according to WSB‑TV.
Piedmont Park safety concerns
The incident unfolded less than a month after a fatal shooting inside Piedmont Park that left a 16-year-old dead and another person wounded, a case Atlanta police are still investigating. That earlier killing prompted calls for more patrols and better camera coverage at the park, according to the Atlanta Police Department. Together, the two high-profile cases have renewed pressure on city leaders and park officials to shore up safety in one of Midtown's busiest public spaces.
Investigation ongoing
Police arrested a man at the scene in Nelson's case and charged him with public indecency, robbery and simple battery. Investigators say the case remains active and under review. Officials have not yet released a court date or additional information and are urging anyone with tips to contact Atlanta police.
Legal status
The suspect currently faces the listed charges and could be hit with additional counts if investigators uncover further evidence. Nelson says she went public so witnesses and other parkgoers would understand what happened, and local leaders say the city still has work to do in confronting the recent spate of high-profile incidents at Piedmont Park.
