The evening commute along one of North Dallas's busiest arteries turned tragic Tuesday when a motorcyclist died after hitting a concrete barrier at a high-occupancy vehicle entrance on southbound North Central Expressway and then being struck by a trailing car, Dallas police said.

The crash happened near the Midpark Road bridge, where drivers merge into the HOV system. According to Dallas police, the motorcycle was heading south when it collided with the barrier at the HOV entrance and was then hit by a following vehicle, the department told FOX 4.

Paramedics pronounced the rider dead at the scene. All southbound and HOV lanes were shut down for more than four hours, turning an already tense rush hour into a long standstill on U.S. 75 and backing up traffic across the area.

Central Expressway's Safety Record

U.S. 75, better known locally as North Central Expressway, has a long reputation as a fast-moving, crash-prone corridor. In recent years, transportation officials have tried to tamp down speeds by lowering limits on certain stretches.

As speed limits cut on Central Expressway explains, those changes came after studies and reporting pointed to rising speed-related deaths and serious injuries. Hoodline also reported on a March wreck in which a child was killed after a car struck a wall along the same corridor, a grim reminder of how unforgiving collisions with fixed barriers can be.

Investigation And Traffic Impact

Dallas police's crash unit spent hours processing the scene, documenting vehicle positions and collecting evidence while traffic stacked up behind the closure. Officers ultimately cleared the wreckage and reopened the southbound and HOV lanes after several hours, FOX 4 reported.

The department has not released the rider's identity and says the investigation remains ongoing. Police have not yet identified any contributing factors in the crash, which unfolded at the busy Midpark Road bridge where entrance ramps channel vehicles directly into the HOV lanes.
