A man died after being struck by a vehicle early Wednesday in south Sacramento, in the 5500 block of Stockton Boulevard. Officers and medical personnel responded to the scene, where the victim was pronounced dead.
According to ABC10, Sacramento police said the driver stayed at the scene while first responders attempted life-saving measures before the man was declared dead. Police told ABC10 that impairment does not appear to be a factor. Detectives from the department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit have taken over the case and are asking anyone with information to contact the Sacramento Police Department.
Stockton Boulevard Has A Dangerous Reputation
This stretch of Stockton Boulevard has repeatedly been flagged as one of Sacramento’s most crash-prone corridors, with recent pedestrian deaths fueling louder calls for safer crossings. The Sacramento Bee has detailed a broader pattern of deadly collisions along the corridor and the city’s ongoing struggle to meet its Vision Zero traffic safety goals.
Roadways were closed while investigators processed the scene, and Stockton Boulevard was shut down between Fruitridge Road and Lawrence Drive, police told ABC10. Under department procedures, detectives from the Sacramento Police Department's Major Collision Investigation Unit handle follow-up on fatal crashes, as outlined in Sacramento Police Department policy GO 537.05. Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the department or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers.
The crash adds to mounting pressure on city planners to overhaul the corridor. The City of Sacramento has advanced a Stockton Boulevard Safety and Transit Enhancement Project that looks at new crosswalks, bike lanes and transit improvements aimed at slowing vehicle speeds and shortening crossing distances. City of Sacramento materials show the project is in design and community outreach stages while planners weigh safety trade-offs along this busy south Sacramento stretch.
