A 57-year-old woman was killed Thursday in a two-vehicle collision at a closely watched East Cobb intersection, according to Cobb County police. The victim, identified by authorities as Yodit Momo, was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police said no other injuries were reported, and the intersection of Old Paper Mill Road and Lower Roswell Road was shut down for a time while investigators worked the scene.
What happened
According to WSB-TV, Momo was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry west on Old Paper Mill Road when the Camry "entered the path" of a 2020 Dodge Ram that was traveling east on Lower Roswell Road. The two vehicles then collided. WSB-TV reports the crash forced the closure of the intersection while emergency crews and investigators remained on scene.
People and investigation
Local reporting by East Cobb News said the crash occurred around 11:06 a.m. The outlet identified the occupants of the Ram as 44-year-old Charles Warren of Acworth and 24-year-old passenger Benjamin Chittick of Kennesaw. Neither was injured, according to that report.
Sgt. Eric Smith told East Cobb News that Momo’s next of kin have been notified and that the Cobb County Police Department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is handling the investigation. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the CCPD STEP Unit at (770) 499-3987.
Why the intersection matters
The stretch of Lower Roswell Road that includes this intersection has been a concern for county officials. A fact sheet from the Cobb County Department of Transportation notes that the corridor’s crash rate was about 4.5 times the statewide average for 2015 through 2017. County studies found that roughly half of those crashes could be mitigated by installing a raised median.
The county has evaluated options aimed at reducing collisions and improving traffic flow along Lower Roswell Road. Those planning and safety analyses are described in county DOT materials as part of a broader effort to address frequent crashes and congestion along the corridor.
How to help
The Cobb County Police Department’s STEP Unit investigates fatal traffic crashes and is asking anyone who witnessed this collision or has information that could assist the case to call investigators at (770) 499-3987. The same number appears regularly in the department’s public notices. Residents who want more detail on the road’s safety record and potential fixes can review Cobb County DOT materials and Cobb County Police Department public notices that are available online.
