A Friday afternoon ride ended in tragedy for a Bushnell man in Pinellas County when a Toyota Camry turned into the path of his Aprilia motorcycle at the intersection of 115th Avenue North and County Road 1, authorities said.
The crash happened around 2:47 p.m. The 33-year-old motorcyclist was taken from the scene to a nearby hospital, where he later died, according to troopers.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, as reported by Tampa Bay 28, the Camry was driven by a 29-year-old man from Spring Hill. Troopers say the Camry was heading south on County Road 1 when the driver turned left into the northbound lane, directly into the motorcycle’s path.
Left-turn crashes remain a leading cause
The basic pattern here, a vehicle turning left into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, is a familiar and deadly one. NHTSA's Traffic Safety Facts: Motorcycles report for 2022 found that roughly 44 percent of fatal two-vehicle motorcycle crashes involved the other vehicle turning left while the motorcycle was going straight, passing or overtaking.
The data underscores how risky intersections and left turns can be for riders and drivers, even in what might seem like routine traffic.
Investigation ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and has not yet said whether charges will be filed. Tampa Bay 28 reported that crews routed traffic around the intersection while investigators worked the scene and that the inquiry remains active.
Officials have not released the names of those involved. This story will be updated as troopers release additional details.
