A two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 50 near Sierra-at-Tahoe Road on Saturday evening left one driver dead and another injured, after eastbound lanes shut down and traffic backed up through the Meyers area. The injured driver was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital, while the other driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
What officials said
The crash was logged as a fatal collision at U.S. 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road, and the investigation remains active, according to the California Highway Patrol. As reported by ABC10, the incident involved a 2010 Honda Fit that made an unsafe turning movement into the eastbound lanes and a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe.
Lake Valley Fire crews pronounced the Honda Fit’s driver dead at the scene. Authorities say the Chevrolet Tahoe’s driver was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries, per ABC10.
Road closure and response
Eastbound U.S. 50 was closed for several hours while crews cleared debris and recovered the vehicles, South Tahoe Now reported. Lake Valley Fire, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans coordinated traffic control and scene management while investigators worked to piece together what happened.
Why this stretch matters
The Echo Summit and Sierra-at-Tahoe corridor of U.S. 50 has already seen several serious wrecks this season, and officials have repeatedly warned about safety on the mountain route. Earlier incidents and CHP advisories about chain controls and closures have been detailed by Hoodline and the Sacramento Bee.
In this latest crash, CHP officials say alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be factors, but reconstruction work is ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP is asking anyone who may have dash-cam footage or other information about the collision to contact the South Lake Tahoe office, as reported by ABC10. This story will be updated as authorities release additional details.
