Komodo Dallas went dark in a hurry yesterday, abruptly shuttering the sprawling two-story restaurant and lounge that had anchored a prime corner of Deep Ellum since April 2023. Diners with upcoming reservations learned their tables were suddenly off the books, and the brand’s Dallas online footprint all but vanished, leaving a glaring hole in The Epic development’s dining lineup.
According to D Magazine, guests received a blunt text message that read, "We regret to inform you that our restaurant will be permanently closing and unfortunately we will be unable to honor your upcoming reservation." The outlet also reports that the Komodo Dallas Instagram account has been deleted and that komododallas.com now sends visitors to the Miami operation instead.
What We Know
As detailed by The Dallas Morning News, Komodo Dallas occupied a 22,500-square-foot, two-story space inside The Epic, serving a menu of elevated Southeast Asian dishes alongside steaks, with Peking duck positioned as the star attraction. The restaurant opened in April 2023 and represented the only Texas outpost of David Grutman’s Groot Hospitality. The company’s Komodo locations in Miami and Las Vegas remain in operation.
Where Things Stand Online
Type in komododallas.com now and you land on Komodo Miami, which highlights the chain’s Miami and Las Vegas restaurants. Groot Hospitality’s corporate site still lists Komodo among its venues, but there is no Dallas-specific statement or explanation posted about the closure.
What This Could Mean For Deep Ellum
Local chatter has zeroed in on the inherent risks of dropping a giant, celebrity-backed concept into a nightlife-heavy neighborhood. D Magazine summed up that skepticism in four words: "Maybe it was too big." For now, the future of the 22,500-square-foot space is an open question. We will update this story if Groot Hospitality or the property’s landlord weighs in on what comes next.
