Atlanta police are working to track down a man labeled a person of interest after a deadly shooting tied to a reported incident in the heart of downtown last Thursday, and they are leaning hard on the public for help. Homicide detectives have been canvassing the area and are urging nearby residents, workers, and visitors to share anything they saw or heard that might move the case forward.
According to Atlanta News First, officers responded to a reported shooting in downtown Atlanta on Thursday and quickly opened a homicide investigation. The outlet reports that police worked the scene while simultaneously calling on potential witnesses to contact investigators.
The public push for information mirrors other recent Atlanta Police Department cases where detectives have gone wide with appeals to identify people of interest. In one such case on Conley Road, investigators released photos and surveillance footage and urged tipsters to reach out to Crime Stoppers for anonymous leads, as reported by WSB-TV.
The latest downtown killing lands amid a string of high profile shootings in the area. Earlier in May, gunfire near Forsyth Street and the Greyhound station left four people injured, a reminder that violence is hitting some of the city’s busiest corridors, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
What police are asking for
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed Thursday’s shooting, or who recognizes the person of interest, to call the APD Homicide Unit at (404) 546-4235. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 or through the P3 app, WSB-TV reports.
The investigation remains active, and the department has not released a name for the man they are calling a person of interest. Officials acknowledged that some people may be reluctant to talk to police, but they are still urging victims and witnesses to come forward, according to Atlanta News First.
