Downtown Seattle is getting one of its signature hangouts back. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Parks Foundation are rolling out a grand reopening for Westlake Park later this month, capping a months-long renovation that aims to make the plaza more accessible, more event-ready and a lot more lively. Expect a ribbon-cutting, live music and food to officially welcome the park back into daily downtown life.

According to Parkways, the City of Seattle’s Parks blog, the ceremony is scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28. Seattle Parks and Recreation has shared the same details on Facebook and notes partners that include the Seattle Parks Foundation, the Downtown Seattle Association, the Metropolitan Improvement District and the Downtown Community Council. The parks department says the gathering will be brief and family-friendly, with music and food following the ribbon-cutting.

Renovation And Timeline

Westlake Park shut down for construction in October 2025 as the city moved ahead with a redesign focused on modernized infrastructure, better accessibility and easier programming for events and performances, The Seattle Times reported. Project updates put the work at roughly $4 million and note that crews salvaged granite reliefs from the park’s old fountain so they could be inset into new planters and beds, according to the Daily Journal of Commerce.

Summer Programming And The World Cup

The timing is no accident. The Downtown Seattle Association says Westlake Park will host Downtown Summer Sounds and serve as a hub for FIFA World Cup watch parties and other activations. Organizers say the redesigned plaza should be better suited for crowds and the mix of public programming set for June and July.

Before The Ribbon Cutting

The project’s contractor, Sellen Construction, posted that fencing was scheduled to come down and the park space reopen to the public on May 22, with the formal community ceremony still set for May 28. City and foundation updates describe upgrades that include new plantings along with lighting and electrical improvements meant to support performances, events and safer pedestrian flow through the plaza.

Plan Your Visit

Westlake Park is a short walk from Westlake Station and several surface transit stops, according to Sound Transit, so organizers are nudging visitors to arrive by transit or on foot. The grand reopening is free and open to the public, with a short program designed to be kid friendly. Attendees are asked to follow posted signs and staff or volunteer direction as downtown plazas return to more active, everyday use.
