A 34-year-old man identified by family as George Miller is fighting for his life at Harborview Medical Center after what police describe as a vicious, unprovoked attack just after midnight Monday outside the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Seattle. Relatives say the assault left him with massive head and facial injuries, and he is on a ventilator in the hospital’s intensive care unit while detectives search for the person who walked up, repeatedly struck him and then calmly left.
What investigators say
Seattle police say officers were called around 12:06 a.m. to reports of an injured man in the 500 block of Madison Street and found Miller lying on the ground with significant head trauma. Medics rushed him to Harborview in critical condition, according to the Seattle Police Department. Investigators reviewed surveillance video that shows a suspect approach while Miller was bent over, strike him with an object and continue hitting him before walking away. Detectives with the Homicide and Assault Unit are leading the investigation.
Family describes injuries and pleads for help
Family members have identified the victim as George Miller and say he has been on a ventilator in Harborview’s intensive care unit since the attack, the family told KOMO. His mother, Lisa Driscoll, described fractures to the back of his skull and to multiple facial bones and said one of his ears was nearly severed. Doctors have not yet determined whether Miller will regain his sight or hearing.
Relatives estimate the attacker hit him more than a dozen times, possibly up to 20, and say they are asking nearby businesses to pull any security footage from around midnight that might show the suspect. The family is also collecting online donations to help pay for mounting medical bills and what they expect will be long-term care needs.
Background and community response
Before the attack, Miller had been homeless and struggled with fentanyl addiction but wanted to rebuild his life, family members told KPTV. The case has shaken advocates and neighbors, who told local outlets it highlights ongoing fears about violence against people living outdoors. It has also prompted renewed calls for anyone with cameras near Sixth Avenue and Madison Street to look back at overnight footage from that time frame.
