What started as a crash in downtown St. Louis ended with a 23-year-old Florissant man in jail, a discarded handgun on the pavement, and suspected cocaine booked into evidence, according to police.
Officers say the man, identified as Rodney Holt, wrecked a stolen vehicle on Friday, then bolted from the scene on foot. As he ran, police allege he tossed a handgun, which detectives later recovered. Investigators also seized a pill bottle that held white, rock-like fragments that were identified as cocaine. The vehicle itself had been reported stolen out of Maryland Heights, and police say a victim’s quick report and license-plate number helped them track it down.
As reported by FOX2, a patrol officer spotted the damaged vehicle shortly after the crash and saw Holt and two other people scatter from the car. According to police, Holt dropped a firearm while he ran and detectives seized the weapon at the scene. The pill bottle fragments were later identified as cocaine, and one victim gave officers the license plate and vehicle description that helped them locate the car, the outlet notes.
Charges filed by the circuit attorney
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office has charged Holt with multiple felonies, including unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, armed criminal action, possession of a controlled substance, leaving the scene of an accident, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest, according to the office. Prosecutors filed those counts after detectives submitted a probable-cause statement outlining what they say happened before and after the crash.
Court records and defendant's status
Court documents show Holt is a convicted felon, was on active probation in St. Louis County at the time of the crash, and has a pending felony case in St. Louis Circuit Court. Those records, along with the new arrest reports, now form the backbone of the case prosecutors are building.
What happens next
Holt remains jailed while prosecutors move the case through the charging and hearing process. Authorities say the investigation leaned heavily on the vehicle owner’s information and the officer’s probable-cause statement, and additional details are expected to surface in court records as the case advances.
Legal implications
The charges against Holt include several felony counts that carry the possibility of prison time if he is convicted. Prosecutors are expected to rely on the firearm recovered at the scene, the suspected cocaine fragments and witness information as they decide how aggressively to pursue the case in court.
