Wrentham police are trying to track down whoever abandoned an emaciated dog at the town’s dog park early Friday morning, after the animal was found in rough shape and clearly in need of care.
The dog was discovered at about 4:30 a.m., left at the Wrentham dog park, according to Boston 25 News. Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath told the station the dog appeared to have recently had puppies and was covered in feces and urine when officers found her. Police are asking anyone who might recognize the dog or know who left her there to come forward.
How to help
The Wrentham Police Department is urging residents to call 508-384-2121 with any tips about the dog’s owner. Officers are specifically asking for details such as the time someone may have seen the dog being dropped off, vehicle descriptions, or any identifying information about a possible owner that could help move the investigation along.
What the law says
Abandoning or neglecting an animal can run afoul of state law. Under the animal-cruelty statute, G.L. c. 272 § 77, cruelty to animals is a criminal offense that can carry fines and possible prison time, and a conviction can also allow the court to forfeit animals to animal-protection organizations.
