A 22-year-old Tracy man was killed today after a violent two-car crash that left one vehicle fully engulfed in flames at Tracy Boulevard and Grant Line Road. Witnesses told first responders that people were trapped inside the burning vehicle, and officers and medics managed to pull the driver out, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the second vehicle, both from Tracy, were taken to a hospital with major injuries, and the cause of the collision is still under investigation.
According to a Tracy Police Department news release, officers were dispatched around 12:15 AM to reports of the crash and arrived to find two vehicles, one of them completely on fire. Responders from CENCAL Fire and EMS Authority and police crews pulled the solo driver from the burning car and began life-saving efforts, but the 22-year-old man died at the scene. The department identified the occupants of the second vehicle only as a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman from Tracy, both taken to an area hospital with major injuries and listed in stable condition.
As reported by CBS Sacramento, witnesses said one of the cars was fully engulfed in flames and that first responders worked to free trapped occupants. The outlet noted that investigators have not yet released the victim's name and that the Traffic Safety Unit has taken over the investigation.
Grant Line Road Has Seen Big Backups Lately
The same stretch of roadway near the I-205 overpass has had other recent traffic headaches, including last Friday's big-rig crash that temporarily shut down westbound Grant Line Road. That closure, along with other recent disruptions, highlights how a single crash on this busy corridor can ripple out into major delays for commuters and freight traffic. KCRA reported last Friday's closure.
Investigation And How To Help
The Tracy Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is leading the investigation. The department is asking anyone with information to contact Officer Adrian Macias at [email protected] or (209) 831-6949. Officials are also urging witnesses to preserve and share any dash-cam or cellphone footage that might help clarify what led up to the crash. According to the Tracy Police Department, the investigation remains active.
